Applications of DBMS: DBMS is widely used in various applications such as:

  1. Banking: to store customer information, account details, and transaction history.
  2. E-commerce: to store customer orders, product details, and shipping information.
  3. Healthcare: to store patient records, medical history, and billing information.
  4. Education: to store student records, grades, and course details.
  5. Government: to store citizen data, census data, and public records.

Types of DBMS:

  1. Relational Database Management System (RDBMS): In this type of DBMS, data is stored in tables and is linked to each other using relationships. Examples include MySQL, Oracle, and Microsoft SQL Server.

  2. Object-oriented Database Management System (OODBMS): In this type of DBMS, data is stored in the form of objects. Examples include Versant, ObjectStore, and Objectivity/DB.

  3. Hierarchical Database Management System (HDBMS): In this type of DBMS, data is organized in a tree-like structure. Examples include IBM's Information Management System (IMS) and Windows Registry.

  4. Network Database Management System (NDBMS): In this type of DBMS, data is organized in a network-like structure. Examples include Integrated Data Store (IDS) and CA's IDMS.

Examples of DBMS:

  1. MySQL: This is an open-source RDBMS that is widely used in web applications.

  2. Oracle: This is a commercial RDBMS that is used in many enterprise-level applications.

  3. Microsoft SQL Server: This is a commercial RDBMS that is commonly used in Windows-based applications.

  4. MongoDB: This is an open-source NoSQL database that is designed to handle large volumes of unstructured data.

  5. Cassandra: This is an open-source NoSQL database that is designed to handle large volumes of distributed data.
